A puppy named Guardian refused to leave his dead sister’s side on a road in Texas when the authorities came to the pair’s rescue. Guardian’s sister was found dead but the Catahoula mix continued to try to protect her when officials from Kingsville-Kleberg Health Department Animal Control & Care Center arrived at the ‘heart wrenching’ scene. The American dog growled at the animal control officers (ACOs) as he placed his paw on top of his sibling, the organisation explained. Photos taken by the officers at the scene in Kingsville show Guardian’s protective stance as they tried to approach the pair.
Writing on Facebook, the Center said: ‘This boy wasn’t going to let anyone mess with his sister.

‘Our ACOs had a hard time convincing him everything was going to be alright and they were there to help him.’

They did not say what had caused the death of Guardian’s sister, but some speculated online that it could have been hit by a vehicle on the road.

The statement continued: ’This call was one of the most heart wrenching for our staff, but we thought we’d share some behind the scene images of situations they are faced with on a regular basis.

But it was not all bad news for Guardian, as the Center said it had found someone who wanted to adopt him.

Posting on Friday, May 22, staff explained: ‘He will be held on stray hold for the required 4 days. We have already scheduled an adoption at 8am on the day he becomes available (May 29).’

Having eventually persuaded the dog to let them take him to a facility, they estimate he is six to 12 months old, and said he weighs 27 lbs.

They were unsure if he belonged to anyone so opted to hold him as a stray.

After the incident they explained: ‘He’s still a little confused about what happened, but at least he is now in a safe place with fresh cool water and belly full of food.’
