Sometimes, the phrase ‘man’s best friend’ is meant to be taken very literally.

Such was the case with Shane Hudson and his best buddy Weller, the mastiff and Staffordshire bull terrier mix who served as best man as his wedding. The three-year-old dog joined Shane and his wife Amanda as they made their vows and celebrated their nuptials, wearing a little tux and looking every bit the part. Shane, 34 and Amanda, 32, both from Hazel Park, Michigan, knew from the start that they wanted Weller involved in their wedding.

Alternate Their Toys to Keep Their Interest. Just like us dogs get bored with new stuff after awhile, and this includes their toys. Keep their interest by alternating their access to them. Once your dog hasn’t seen their blue ball in a month they’ll have a brand new appreciation for it the next time it makes an appearance.

Shane, who works in sales, said: ‘We thought maybe we would make him a ring bearer but ultimately landed on him being the “Best Boy” because, well, he is. ‘Weller is our world. We adopted him as a puppy, and he goes pretty much anywhere we can take him.

‘Finding a venue that would allow him to hang out for a while was important to us in the planning process, and we got exactly what we wanted.

Many dogs have a condition nicknamed “Frito Feet,” in which their feet smell little bit like corn chips. As Matt Soniak wrote in a Big Question on this site, this has to do with the kind of bacteria found on a pup’s feet, and “could be due to yeast or Proteus bacteria. Both are known for their sweet, corn tortilla–like smell. Or it could be Pseudomonas bacteria, which smell a little fruitier—but pretty close to popcorn to most noses.”

The wedding was a hit, with Shane describing it as ‘absolutely perfect’.

‘We have some non-traditional tastes and really focused on the celebration of our love for each other,’ he explained.

‘We could not have asked for a better wedding day.

‘We are those annoying dog people who post pictures and videos of Weller all over our social media, so Weller has a mini fan base with our friends and family.

‘We have worked very hard on Weller’s training over the past year, and we are still getting compliments on how well-behaved he was.’

Don’t cheap out on training time. Make training fun and frequent. Keep training light and fun. Don’t get demanding with your dog. Instead, go with the flow. See what develops. Trust that if you do this long enough, you’re going to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

What a good boy.
